WHAT IS ‘COMING OUT ON TOP’?
Coming Out On Top is kind of like a choose-your-own-path novel combined with a comic book and played on a computer. Try the demo if you’re curious. You make the decisions about what the main character does and says as you play through a variety of hilarious, erotic, and heartwarming stories about a college senior who’s just come out of the closet. Note that it’s an erotic game with adult content and is intended for mature audiences (18 and older only.)
I HAVE THE CENSORED VERSION, HOW DO I DE-CENSOR IT?
See this page for instructions. This ONLY applies to people who used Paypal on BMT to purchase. (All other purchasers will already have the original, sexy version!)
WHAT PLATFORMS ARE THIS GAME AVAILABLE FOR AND WHAT ARE THE SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS?
Windows PC, Mac, and Linux. The game is compatible with Windows 7 or later, and Mac OS X 10.6 or later. If you’re concerned about compatibility, give the demo a shot.
HOW DO I INSTALL THE DEMO?
WINDOWS:
After the zip finishes downloading, double click on it, or right click on it to extract all (or unzip).
Can’t find the unzip/extract button in Windows 10? Use the ‘extract’ option at the top of your window.
Windows will create a folder called Coming-Out-On-Top-all. Go inside the newly created folder and double-click the Coming-Out-On-Top.exe file to run.
MAC:
On a Mac, after the zip finishes downloading, double click to unzip it, or right click on it and select OPEN WITH>ARCHIVE UTILITY from the menu that appears.
This will will create a folder called Coming-Out-On-Top-Mac. Go inside the folder, then double-click on the .app file (the one with the picture icon) to run the game.
If you get a pop-up window says the game is from an unidentified developer, control-click or right-click the .app icon, then choose Open from the shortcut menu. As Apple explains, “If you try to open an app that is not registered with Apple by an identified developer you get a warning dialog. This doesn’t necessarily mean that something’s wrong with the app. For example, some apps were written before developer ID registration began.
Note: due to recent changes in the Mac OS, you may need to MOVE the entire Coming Out On Top folder into your User/Applications folder for it to work.
If this doesn’t work, it probably means your security settings are on extra high (often the default for newer systems.) You can also grant an exception for a blocked app by clicking the “Open Anyway” button in the General pane of Security & Privacy preferences. This button is available for about an hour after you try to open the app. To open this pane, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Security & Privacy, then click General.
On some systems, the game might “hang” for a few seconds without any window appearing. Double click the game icon again and it will show up.

HOW DOES THE BILLING SHOW UP ON MY CREDIT CARD STATEMENT?
The game is sold through a third-party vendor named BMT Micro. The charge will appear on your statement as “WWW.BMTMICRO-INFO.COM 910-792-9100 NC”. BMT Micro sells general purpose and entertainment software and is not an “adult entertainment” related company.
HOW DO I INSTALL THIS GAME?
The game comes in a .zip file. Unzip it into a folder. Once you’ve unzipped it, open the folder.
If you’re a Windows user, double click the .exe file inside. (Having problem with Windows 10? Here’s a step by step process here!)
If you’re on Mac, double click the .app icon.
On Linux, run the .sh script. Do not remove the .exe or .sh file from the folder or the game will not work.
I’M HAVING AN ISSUE INSTALLING/RUNNING THE GAME.
The most common issues are as follows:

If the game was unzipped with a third party .zip program, the game may not run. Right or CTRL click on the downloaded .zip and choose to open the file with your operating system’s unzipping utility.
- Game won’t run on Sierra after update. Please email me at obscurasoft@gmail.com for an updated version and let me know the email address you used with BMT or Itch.io so I can resend you the new version.
- The game doesn’t run on your Mac and just hangs. MOVE the entire Coming Out On Top folder into your User/Applications folder then try running it.

Game won’t run on Yosemite or Windows 8. Newer versions of the game (1.2.0 and up) should run fine on these new platforms. If you’re still having problems or are trying to run the demo on Yosemite, hold CTRL then click on the .app file. To run it on Windows 8, right click on the .exe file and run it as an administrator (you might want to choose ALWAYS run as an administrator). This has to do with heightened security measures for the newer OS’s that unfortunately lock out small game developers like myself.

Game won’t save on Windows 8. Right click on the .exe file and run the game as an administrator. You should be able to save now. (Again, this has to with increasing security measures for the new OS’s that are starting to lock out small developers. In the meantime, that’s the quick fix!)

On Windows, the game just “hangs” there instead of opening. 1) Update your drivers. 2) If it’s still hanging, close the file. Hold down shift while opening the game. A menu will show up, and choose “FORCE SOFTWARE RENDERER.” Close the game and try running it again.

HOW CAN I DELETE ALL MY PREVIOUS SAVES/GALLERY AND START FRESH?
To clear the gallery and saves, you need to delete the saves folder in TWO different places.
First make sure you exit out of the game.
DELETING THE FIRST SAVES FOLDER

On Windows:
Find %APPDATA%/RenPy/Coming-Out-On-Top
Delete the SAVES folder inside
On Mac:
YourUserName/Library/RenPy/Coming-Out-On-Top/
Delete everything inside.
DELETING THE SECOND SAVES FOLDER IF YOU’RE ON STEAM

Open Steam. Right click on Coming Out On Top in your Steam library. Click PROPERTIES > tab LOCAL FILES > BROWSE LOCAL FILES
In the GAME folder delete the folder called SAVES
Now when you start the game everything should be clear.
DELETING THE SECOND SAVES FOLDER (NON-STEAM)

Go into the game folder called Coming-Out-On-Top-all (or Coming-Out-On-Top-Mac).
Delete the folder called SAVES (If you are on a later version of Mac (Sierra+) you may not have this folder in this spot, which is fine.)
Now when you start the game everything should be clear.
HELP! THE SCREEN IS TOO BIG/SMALL/NEEDS TO BE RESIZED!
You can resize the window to the size you like, or use the “F” key to jump to full screen and back again.
HOW DO I UNLOCK A PARTICULAR ILLUSTRATION?
Through persistence, dedication, and hard work! Believe in yourself! Seriously, though, we may put a comprehensive walkthrough together at some point. Then again, we may not. 😉 Something that may help: use the rollback feature on your mouse or your up and down arrows to go back in time and make different choices. Save often.
DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS OR COOL TIDBITS FOR ME WHILE I PLAY?
First off, there is some very useful stuff in the options menu.

Turning “Skip unread text” on allows you to skip through all the boring reading stuff, including text you haven’t read.

Turning “Skip after choices” let’s the game keep on trucking at max speed after selecting a menu choice if you’re in skip mode.

Toggle skip mode by pressing the TAB key during gameplay.

You can do neat stuff like turn condoms on and off or select the beard and body hair options for each guy.
Spoilers ahead! Money optimization:

You can bid Beau up on your tutoring rate for Brad.
-
Use the cheaper weekend activities to socialize with Penny and Ian, such as going to the movies or walking the Pomeranian.
-
Choosing to study instead of masturbating will raise your grades, thus freeing up a weekend to tutor for extra money.
-
You can negotiate your rate with Theo up to $400, and he’ll even throw in a free toaster.
-
Choosing to go left when biking over to Amos’ house puts you through a mini text-adventure that gets you $100 if you persist until the end of it.
-
Winning the trivia contest with Phil nets you $150. Use the rollback feature or google to ensure your victory.
The Amos route has far fewer pitfalls than the other routes, which makes it easier to get to the end, but potentially more difficult to get the ending you want. Your ending is dependent on an overall score for how you behave with Amos. There is a romantic, a sexual, a weird, and a mean ending. The prevailing characteristic of the poem you write makes up roughly 50% of your overall score.

Great game, I can’t stress it enough, and I always find incredible how you were able to create these amazing, real stories yet simplified enough to turn them into a game, and I say “real” because precisely I’ve had very similar stories with a guy or two, so I could identify with Mark as I was playing said storylines, and it made my days.
I have a problem and I’ll be grateful if you help me: I can’t seem to get one of Mark’s gallery images, the rightmost at the second row… Please please please help me! Do I have to flunk at college to get it or what?

I absolutely love this game, I’ve played through every successful ending (as well as two, er… alternate endings I guess is what I should call them without giving anything away) with the help of a walk through, and I’m looking forward to upcoming additional content. I wanted to mention, for those out there who are fans of The Sims 4, that the main cast of Coming Out On Top was created and shared in the online gallery for anyone who wishes to take control of these beloved characters and play around with the hunks that didn’t win Mark’s heart perhaps falling for each other. I did not create them, but I did come across them and thought I’d share my findings here.
This might sound weird, but I just completed Slurpy’s route and boy… the whole story turned into something like a psychological thriller movie. I like it, kinda sad it’s a little too short. I think you should add a little more to it XD

When Brofinder becomes usable in-game, would it enable you to meet up with some of the side characters from paths you aren’t currently on? Perhaps even as a pleasant surprise. For example, using it while on Phil’s path you might get a fling with Roman, or D’artagnan.

Is there a way you can add more endings to the bonus dates. I just feel they have more of a single path kinda feel and would love for their too be a bit more diverse in sexual encounter variety types. Luke is a really cool and funny but there’s not much we can do with him and I think it would be great if he could be expanded upon.
As I’ve mentioned before, these are short bonus dates that come free with the game. There will be 16 guys total for COOT when all is said and done, and for a game that’s currently $15. I happen to think it’s a pretty good deal 🙂 Perhaps I’ll add more in the future but I’m focused on getting the rest of the dates out first.

The game is great! I bought it back when you first made it accessible to people who did not kick start. I wish I knew about this before so I could have helped in kick starting it, but I have very much enjoyed playing the game. Still come back to it from time to time.
That being said, I don’t seem to have the new guys accessible. Is there a way for me to unlock them or do I have to pay for the DLC(not that I wouldn’t mind)? I really want to play the new story lines. Thanks ahead of time for the help.

Hi Hi. I just discovered COOT last weekend via friend and devoured the entire thing in a single long weekend day (went to bed at 3 AM after finally securing my last gallery image)—it was the rom com/porn mashup I never knew I needed, thank you.
I know you’re currently focused on finishing the remaining Brofinder dates, and when you’re finally finished, you will likely want to move on to fresher projects… But if you DO make any additional expansions to the main storyline(s), I’d love to see more material for Alex, who I think currently has some of your tightest plotting (I had great fun with all of the academic espionage, and the cinematic quality of the near miss, ‘hurry up and catch him before you lose him forever’ interaction in the park that closes the path), but most surface-level character development. I can envision a scenario in which Mark has to defend him in a formal inquiry w/ the dean… or shows up at his doorstep to convince him not to leave… etc.
I would also love to see the opportunity to use that final week or so of school to somehow reconnect with one of the boys that got away, if things have gone south on one’s chosen path (like about the time Ian shows up in Mark’s room telling him he’s spending too much time with the fish). For instance, say that I make a wrong move with Brad, and lose him—maybe there is an accelerated finale path where I discover the feelings that Ian has been secretly harboring this whole time. Or say I don’t pursue Penny’s plan to help Alex, and he disappears—could there be an opportunity to run into Brad somewhere on campus in the final weeks of school and discover a mutual attraction? ..& etc. …I’m sure that connecting the paths to each other adds a nightmarish level of complexity, but I am thinking more like discreet offshoots that are not directly connected to the earlier interactions with these characters, similar to when we first encounter Amos pretty late in the Ian path and it just creates a fresh, discreet branch. (it would just be that which options are offered is dependent upon who you met earlier in the gameplay, before your choices started closing off the options—i.e. how it’s possible to meet Brad at your first tutoring session or pick Phil up at the airport or do the bukkake party w/ Jed before committing to pursuing another one of the guys).
It’s great that this game works out of the box on Linux !

Just one question: In the FAQ, it says “You’ll be able to purchase the ‘Raunchy Tell-All Art Book?’ in 2015”. I guess this has been postponed? Is there an update when I might be able to buy this? Is there another walkthrough out there? I think the one she linked in the FAQ has been taken down. I’ve romanced everyone but there are a few pics I haven’t unlocked in the gallery and I want to see what I need to do differently.

I downloaded the demo, unzipped, saved to a new directory on my C:\ drive (C:\comingoutontop_demo),selected Extract All to the same directory and received an error when I double clicked the exe:

Hi Andrew, Norton won’t recognize files from several smaller developers. If you don’t want to turn off Norton, I would tell Norton to say that folder is ok. I believe the instructions are here: https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v80629965_EndUserProfile_en_us. Jump down to the part where it says Exclude Files or Folders from Scan.
It’s a fairly common problem with games made on the Renpy engine, as you can see here: https://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=38117. Though I’m not entirely sure about this, It might also be because the game is not “family friendly.”
I just bought a full version. How do I delete the data from the previous version to start over?
To clear the gallery and saves, you need to delete the saves folder in two different places.
The location of the first folder is is within your Coming Out On Top all game folder. It’s called “SAVES” and you can delete the entire folder, or whatever is in it.
The location of the second folder depends what system you are running.
On Windows:
%APPDATA%/RenPy/Coming-Out-On-Top
On Mac:
YourUserName/Library/RenPy/Coming-Out-On-Top/
If you want to start over totally “clean,” delete those saves folders in BOTH locations.

When you first go to Brad’s to tutor him, during your first interaction with Roman, pick, “What do you mean I’m not smokin’ hot? /Show him your nips./” Then after talking to Beau – it doesn’t matter what you choose, pick “Let me tongue that tight little starfish an we’ll call it good,” and you’ll get a fantasy scene with Roman and Beau.
